"Rao Fu’s work blends vibrant colors with symbolic imagery, creating a world that shifts fluidly between reality and fantasy. His paintings, infused with mystery and surreal elements, draw viewers into a theatrical realm where time and space unravel like an epic journey. In an era of uncertainty, Fu’s art heightens perception, inviting viewers to navigate intricate visual narratives that explore the evolution of human civilization. His work not only conjures dreamlike landscapes but also sparks profound reflections on humanity, history, and the complexities of existence."

Art Fair Tokyo 2025
5-1 Marunouchi 3-chome, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo
Tokyo International Forum, Hall E B2F (Booth S022)
March 7 - 9, 2025
The solo presentation of artist Rao Fu will be held at Art Fair Tokyo 2025. This exhibition is a special project presented by the world-renowned Perrotin Gallery.
"Rao Fu’s works profoundly connect Eastern and Western cultures, blending the depth of Asian philosophy with the essence of European painting and a dramatic atmosphere, creating a visual narrative that transcends both time and space.
In his recently created works, Rao Fu’s enigmatic hybrid beings perform as if on an immersive stage. Their pupil-less, color-fluorescing gazes inevitably and almost hypnotically affect viewers, extending beyond the boundaries of the image. Defensiveness, warning, and vulnerability are conveyed in their faces and gestures, yet the protagonists exude hope and resilience. Fathers shelter their children from a numinous danger, and shepherds stand protectively before their families and herds. Some figures seem to have emerged from European myths and fantastical tales of the 18th and 19th centuries. For instance, a soldier dressed in an elegant Renaissance habit à la Lucas Cranach holds a saber in one hand and a frog from Grimm’s fairy tales in the other. Yet, an omnipresent threat hovers over the scene. The contrasts between nameless darkness and aggressively phosphorescent chromatics shape the landscape and figures. Darkness (Yūgen) and the emptiness between things (Ma), two principles of Japanese aesthetics, describe the mood of indifferent restlessness and fear with which Fu confronts his viewers. These works transform into mood landscapes of global warfare, rising nationalism, and ecological crisis.
Rao Fu, who has lived and worked in Dresden for over twenty years, has developed a unique visual language that blends Eastern and Western artistic influences. His work addresses the universal struggle for existence and reflects his deep commitment to humanitarian and cultural awareness. Early recognition came in Germany, where his artwork-thesis at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts was acquired by the State Art Collections of the state capital. In 2016, the Dresden City Art Collection dedicated a solo exhibition to him, Chimerica, and acquired several works. Most recently, in 2024, his piece Family Rainbow was included in the acquisition and exhibition project Echtzeit. Now internationally recognized, Rao Fu’s paintings transcend cultural barriers, making a powerful appeal for intercultural mutual understanding and offering a visual narrative that invites viewers to reflect on both personal and collective human experiences."

ECOCYCLE
KORNFELD Galerie Berlin
January 24 - February 22, 2025
"KORNFELD Galerie Berlin and the Korean gallery SEOJUNG ART present the group exhibition Ecocycle from January 24 to February 22, 2025, at KORNFELD and its project space, 68projects. Featuring seven artists from Germany, China, and Korea, the exhibition explores universal themes of ecology, humanity, and cultural interconnectedness. Ecocycle unites contrasting elements—light and darkness, city and nature, water and earth, rationality and irrationality—through harmonious artistic expressions. The selected artists, spanning generations and cultural influences, combine traditional and modern techniques to reexamine our shared world.
This collaboration reflects the commitment of KORNFELD and SEOJUNG ART to fostering intercultural dialogue and creating a cyclical exchange of artistic perspectives. The exhibition serves as a platform for Korean and international artists to transcend boundaries and engage in meaningful discourse. The featured artists are Jungwon Phee (1993), Gee Song (1980), Chounhwan Lee (1956), Yeonhwa Hur (1988), Nanan Kang (1979), Jay Gard (1984), and Rao Fu (*1978). The exhibition’s title, Ecocycle, is a blend of "eco" (ecology) and "cycle," referring not only to bionomics and environmental science but also basic human needs.”

ECHTZEIT: New Works for the Art Collection of the City of Dresden
The Dresden City Art Museum
October 26, 2024 - April 21, 2025
"This group exhibition not only showcases the new generation of contemporary artists in Dresden but also paints a comprehensive portrait of the local artist community, injecting new vitality into this city of painting! We are very honored to see Rao Fu as part of the exhibition, and he is the only Asian artist participating. During a brief conversation at the opening ceremony, the organizer said something very touching: “As the only Asian artist in this collection exhibition, Rao Fu’s achievements represent a push towards artistic diversity and internationalization. Through his works, the audience can experience the new visual perspectives brought about by the fusion of different cultures. This is of great significance for breaking cultural boundaries and promoting cross-cultural understanding.”

安卓芸術 Mind Set Art Center:

”In Rao Fu’s upcoming exhibition in Kyoto, he engages in a dialogue with Japanese artist Shinji Ohmaki on the theme of “nature.” Such opportunities are rare for artists, as they allow them the freedom to fully explore a given theme. This exchange deepened Rao Fu’s understanding of local Japanese culture. The exhibition will feature six works, where Fu expresses profound nostalgia and philosophical reflections on the coexistence of nature and humanity through his unique artistic language. His poetic imagination, rooted in the earth, evokes a sense of belonging, as though everything in the universe is seeking its home. The quiet inner strength of his works is captivating. Rao Fu’s art has always had a strong cross-cultural resonance. His use of color is beautiful and multi-layered, making the stories in each painting more dramatic and mysterious, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in his world and explore the deeper connections between humans and nature.”
